RSK with Unity: The differences that make us

Published on October 05, 2023

Formed in 2021 with a mission to bring a diverse and inclusive outlook to life at RSK, the RSK with Unity network celebrates colleagues whatever their race, culture or beliefs. It is one of four employee-owned networks, and it strives to support employees from ethnic minorities by recognising, valuing and unlocking their potential across the group.

Since its creation, the network has gone from strength to strength and currently has over 200 members and allies. As it continues to widen its global reach, it acknowledges regional differences in demographics and legislation; this enables members and allies to maintain both common goals and those specific to their regions.

“We’re passionate about the various cultures and communities we and our colleagues represent at RSK and understand the benefits that diversity and different perspectives can bring to the table. We know how important it is for all of us, no matter our backgrounds, to have fair and equitable life chances so we can all feel engaged, valued and empowered. This has always been critical, but now that the challenges, struggles and frustrations that the communities we represent are more openly discussed, it’s imperative for every one of us and every business to play a part in addressing them.” – Jagtar Chonkaria, Chair of the RSK with Unity network

RSK with Unity is working closely with the group to develop reports on ethnicity numbers and the ethnicity pay gap. The former helps to gain a better understanding of where RSK is in terms of the number of people working for the group from different ethnic backgrounds. The latter will be used to identify where there are differences in pay and to help each of the businesses within RSK to implement change to bring about equality.

Throughout the year, RSK with Unity marks important dates that represent the network’s values, such as Black History Month and Global Diversity Awareness Month. Such events offer members an opportunity to organise events, to produce internal and external interviews and to record podcasts, all of which allow them to share their experiences, to celebrate their differences and to educate colleagues across the group.

As the network continues to grow, it looks to support and develop initiatives to increase minority ethnic representation within RSK. This will involve continuing the work on the ethnicity pay gap and creating a strategy for RSK with Unity to become a global network. The committee is also looking to establish who the network aligns with from an institutional perspective and how it can maximise the benefits of membership.

“The network is so important in helping make our and future generations’ working environments and experiences better. It provides mentoring and social opportunities at a local level and globally, and I really enjoy being part of the network and promoting cultural awareness.” – Hasmita Kerai, RSK with Unity member

“As an ally of RSK with Unity, I’m able to offer my support to the network as it works to achieve its goals and objectives. I really enjoy taking part in the various events it hosts to raise the profile of people of ethnic and diverse backgrounds. Being on the committee for the RSK Women’s network also means I can work closely with RSK with Unity to reach a wider audience and to come together on items of intersectionality.” – Jennifer Doolan, RSK with Unity ally

“At RSK with Unity, our ultimate goal is for everyone, no matter where they come from, how they look, how they speak and what religion they follow, to enjoy their life at work. We want everybody to be treated with respect and to work for a company where opportunities are equal for all. Equality, diversity and inclusion are important to all our members and allies; we hope it is important to you too.” – Jagtar Chonkaria, Chair of the RSK with Unity network

RSK employee networks are colleague led and owned spaces to foster awareness, community and inclusion within the workplace. United by shared characteristics, interests and life experiences, colleagues across the RSK Group now host four networks that are creating inclusive, supportive communities that provide education and policy guidance. RSK’s four employee networks are RSK Pride, RSK with Unity, the Neurodiversity network and the RSK Women’s network.

We have recently partnered with the Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (CENTEXS) in Malaysia.

The collaboration involves working on a range of sustainability projects with the Sarawak Government, drawing on the RSK Group network of environmental and engineering professionals.

Dodi Mohammad, of Tradisi Busana PR, has developed a course that draws inspiration from world-renowned designer Prof Datuk (Dr) Jimmy Choo OBE, with the curriculum personally approved by the shoe maestro.

CENTEXS will pilot a sustainability module within this course, supported by RSK`s global sustainability expertise.
