Our Expertise

  • Transport planning

Our team of transport planners conduct a thorough examination of the existing transport network and identify the opportunities that may arise from a new development or changes to an existing business. At the appraisal stage, a site’s key constraints can determine the viability of its potential development. RSK can provide highways advice on the feasibility of a potential development site, including identifying any constraints, investigating access options, preparing preliminary drawings and reviewing transport accessibility to ensure that it meets sustainability criteria.

Major planning applications usually require submission of a transport assessment or statement, depending on the scale of the development, which assesses the transport implications of the proposals. This will usually include an assessment of the likely traffic flows associated with the development and junction capacity modelling, and establish the sustainable use of non-car modes.

RSK can prepare detailed reports utilising experienced transport surveyors to collect data to establish the baseline scenario and industry-standard computer software to model the operation of the transport network. We will develop effective solutions that minimise the traffic impact of proposals. Our tailored solutions can improve the sustainable transport connectivity of new development and the efficiency and operation of existing businesses. This can include the provision of a travel plan to encourage use of more sustainable modes of transport.

  • Travel plans

Sustainable travel forms a key part of governmental strategy to reduce unnecessary car use in order to reduce congestion and carbon dioxide emissions. Travel plans are a tool by which the users of a development, whether they are a resident, an employee, a football supporter or a student, for example, can be encouraged to use alternative sustainable modes of transport, such as walking and cycling or, for longer journeys, public transport.

A travel plan is usually required as part of the planning process, either to support a planning application or as a planning condition to be discharged. At RSK, we believe they are an intrinsic part of the design and that they can make a difference to your proposals. They also have the potential to reduce the amount of car parking proposed within the scheme and limit the traffic impact by shifting those trips to sustainable modes, reducing the cost of off-site infrastructure. We can prepare a travel plan that is individually tailored to suit both the location and the end-users of a development, offering a meaningful choice of transport modes.
Travel plans can also be prepared for existing developments where the redevelopment proposals will result in building expansion and a loss of car parking, for example. Furthermore, they can assist businesses in meeting their sustainability objectives, reducing their carbon footprint and improving staff-wellbeing.

RSK can also assist with the implementation of a travel plan, as they are long-term obligations that require ongoing monitoring to assess their effectiveness and are key to delivering a sustainable development. In collaboration with our design and stakeholder services, we can act as the travel plan coordinator for a development, producing travel information packs/website, organising travel surveys and providing progress reports and information updates throughout the life of the travel plan. For larger residential or employment developments where a critical mass can make a bigger difference, we can organise events and have personal travel plan advisors to help explore journey options. This can also be helpful for large organisations moving to new premises or wishing to make a step change in their business and/or commuter travel patterns.

  • Traffic management planning

The majority of construction projects will require a traffic management plan, or a construction logistics plan in London, to outline how a contractor will manage deliveries, including temporary access, timing, routing and construction compounds. Our experienced team conducts extensive site surveys to identify the transport management and logistics planning required for the site, ensuring our clients receive a scheme tailored to their site’s bespoke needs. We take into consideration the required permissions, emergency plans and vehicle movements onsite, as well as the users and visitors of and to the site and pedestrians. Based on this, we create unique plans for our clients, including design services for temporary accesses, who can be confident we have identified the best possible solutions for them.
