Investigating structures for faults, poor design and overall structural integrity is vital. Inadequate professional expertise and experience in this area can result in buildings collapsing, and, as the most severe consequence, loss of life. We carry out more than 1000 inspections a year on a wide variety of structures, ranging from major national landmarks to small culverts on minor roads. Irrespective of size, budget or location, each project receives the same detailed attention by our experienced inspectors, and clients receive a high-quality inspection report tailored to their needs. By employing experienced engineers that are skilled in specialist-access techniques, including rope access, confined space access and pontoon access, we can undertake work in potentially hazardous locations efficiently, safely and professionally.

Innovative solutions and services

We combine the industry experience of our dedicated structures team, and subsidiaries Central Alliance, Ian Farmer Associates, CAN and Up and Under, with emerging and existing technology to solve our clients’ challenges, and our applied technologies division looks at industry challenges from a unique perspective. In collaboration with software company Utilis, we have helped to develop an analysis process for saturated ground mapping. Using technology that is used to source water on other planets, RSK and Utilis are combining their experience and applying the same satellite technology to map relative ground saturation at a higher resolution than ever before.

We undertake surveys and investigations to determine the construction details, methods and condition of a wide variety of structures. The findings from our surveys, which may include laboratory testing, as-built drawings and repair specifications, are collated to provide the information clients need to progress projects. Our services include structural investigations, steel sampling, scans, trial pits and excavations, geotechnical inspections and unmanned aerial vehicle inspections.

Our clients seek assistance in monitoring, surveying and investigating their assets to either maintain, enhance, upgrade or renew them. They worry about the failure of assets, including structures, and our primary aim is to assure them that we understand their concerns before implementing a bespoke strategy. For example, through voided structure investigations or physical and mechanical testing of concrete, and other materials, we can provide a definite report on the status and stability of a structure. RSK, through its structural inspection specialists, offers vast services covering the spectrum of structural inspections and investigations. We offer general and principal highway inspections, detailed visual railway examinations, buildings surveys and bridge inspections. All our structural investigations are conducted by in-house experts using highly specialist techniques dependent on the nature of the structure and the requirements of the investigation. The structural investigation team specialises in intrusive survey techniques such as diamond coring and drilling techniques. Through the latest non-intrusive techniques, such as muon tomography, we can identify potentially problematic features such as hidden shafts in tunnels, construction voids and hidden critical elements in structures. For an expansive view of a site, we use our unmanned aerial vehicles.

    We provide chemical analysis of a range of construction materials, including concrete, mortar, render/plaster, bricks and paint to establish a range of properties such as composition or the presence of deleterious materials.

    We test concrete, mortar, render, natural and cast stone, roofing slates and tiles, including compressive strength of concrete, slip resistance and abrasion resistance of dimension stone.

  • Specialist mineralogical and elemental composition analysis

    Our specialist mineralogical and elemental composition analysis includes scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF).

  • Deleterious materials survey

    We can identify and evaluate alkali-aggregate reactivity, chlorides, high alumina cement, reinforcement corrosion and sulphates in concrete and calcium silicate bricks.

  • Construction consultancy

    We provide consultancy during the preconstruction design phase, and of existing buildings, to determine causes of failure and assess suitability for refurbishment works.
