Stories to Tell: The importance of celebrating our South Asian community
Published on August 11, 2023RSK is proud to have four employee networks that provide safe and supportive spaces for employees to connect and share experiences with colleagues who share similar backgrounds or identities or those who simply wish to lend their support through allyship. RSK with Unity plays a vital role in bringing colleagues from different ethnic backgrounds together, celebrating and highlighting the differences and values that diversity brings to the organisation. The network is committed to promoting the rich cultural diversity of RSK colleagues all year round, as well as promoting equal opportunities for all.
RSK with Unity also spreads awareness by marking significant dates throughout the year. From mid-July to mid-August, colleagues across the group are marking South Asian Heritage Month. This year’s theme, “Stories to Tell”, draws on the history of South Asians from Afghanistan to Sri Lanka and how far they’ve come to form their own communities in their native countries and beyond. To mark the month, the network hosted an internal panel discussion that centred on this year’s theme, with culture, religion and history all being key to it.
North Wales Regional Delivery Manager at Binnies Mohammad Ammar Ahmad credits RSK for marking the month. “It means everything to me that RSK is supporting South Asian Heritage Month. Many people outside of the culture aren’t aware of the challenges South Asians face in balancing two cultures and the pressures and expectations that come with it. Being part of a business that recognises and supports this means that colleagues can be comfortable with who they are and that their individual challenges are understood and supported.”
As HR Business Partner for the Global division at RSK, Meera Achan knows first-hand how the business’s commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion impacts the workforce and attracts talent to the group.
“RSK is a British-born business; however, its support of South Asian Heritage Month is a nod to the contributions of the South Asian community and shows our willingness as an organisation to not just recognise but also celebrate multiculturalism and diversity.
“Being South Asian myself, it’s nice knowing that our cultural heritage is acknowledged and respected here at RSK all year round and that efforts are always being made to promote cultural awareness and understanding among employees.”
Devika Jina, Marcomms Lead for Group Strategy and Communications Lead for RSK with Unity, says South Asian Heritage Month is just a taste of what’s to come at RSK.
“It’s been really interesting to hear the experiences of colleagues, from those who are of Indian descent to others with Pakistani and Middle Eastern roots. I’ve loved having conversations with everyone and having the chance to reflect on how diverse we are and the similarities that bind us together.
“One thing we all have in common is that our parents and grandparents have worked incredibly hard to build homes for us, in countries from the UK to South Africa. Marking South Asian Heritage Month in this way shows these histories are respected at RSK.”
Over the coming months, RSK with Unity is focusing its efforts on becoming more globally representative, with South Asian Heritage Month just an example of what’s to come. The network will continue to honour its commitment to inclusion and representation with the support of the group.
