Using geophysics to map and assess highway structures

This talk explores how geophysical methods, particularly ground-penetrating radar (GPR), can be used to rapidly and non-invasively investigate the internal structure of pavements, highways and runways. By imaging the different layers of asphalt and underlying materials in detail, these techniques allow us to detect variations in thickness, identify defects and locate buried utilities or drainage features.

The presentation will also highlight the use of 3D modelling to visualise how subsurface layers change across an area, supporting better understanding of construction quality and performance. Applications range from assessing bridge decks to mapping culverts and other critical road infrastructure, providing valuable insights for maintenance and design.

Craig Towell

Principal SafeGround Engineer, RSK Geophysics

Craig Towell has been involved in the surveying of the built environment since 2008, initially with Fugro until 2014 and since then with RSK Geophysics. He has experience of the GPR assessment of highway pavement construction details and defects on schemes from a few tens of metres in length all the way up to entire local authority networks. Craig currently works as a principal surveyor with RSK Geosciences’ SafeGround team, responsible for the non-destructive location and mapping of buried infrastructure.
