There are six native species of reptiles in the UK, and all are legally protected. In accordance with IUCN criteria, two are considered to be endangered species in the UK, and one is listed as vulnerable to extinction. All six are considered to be priority species for biodiversity conservation.

Reptiles have a fascinating biology, relying on the warmth of their environment to allow their bodies to function and hibernating through the colder months of the year. This means they have very specific habitat requirements and are especially vulnerable to land use change and the impacts of land management and development. Populations of all species have experienced significant declines.
