Groundwater is one of our most vital natural resources, yet it remains highly vulnerable to pollution from industrial activities, leaking underground storage tanks, landfills and other anthropogenic sources. Effective remediation is essential to protect drinking water supplies, safeguard ecosystems and ensure long-term land use sustainability.
This introductory presentation will provide a clear overview of groundwater remediation and cover the core objectives of remediation and the decision-making process that guides the selection of appropriate methods. Attendees will be introduced to both conventional and sustainable treatment approaches, with reference to best practice frameworks such as the UK’s land contamination risk management (LCRM) and SuRF-UK sustainability principles.

Dr Anil Waduge
Associate Technical Director, RSK Geosciences
Dr Anil Waduge is a Chartered Scientist with over 20 years of experience in contaminated land management. His expertise includes site investigation and risk assessment, non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) management and sustainable remediation design and implementation. Anil has delivered projects across a range of sectors, including oil and gas, pharmaceuticals, chemicals and land development throughout the UK, Europe and the Middle East.
Actively involved in the wider professional community, Anil is a long-standing member of the Society of Brownfield Risk Assessment (SoBRA) NAPL Group and is currently developing practical guidance on NAPL remediation for UK practitioners.
