Case studies
RSK company CS2 delivered project management, contract administration, cost consultancy and principal designer services for the refurbishment of Atlas House in Marlow, Buckinghamshire, for an investment fund client. The project included CAT A office upgrades, enhanced reception areas, tenant breakout spaces and improved end-ofjourney facilities, all delivered while the building remained occupied. CS2 overcame the challenge of minimising disruption during extensive works, including façade and central plant upgrades. The refurbishment improved the building’s EPC from E to B, halving energy consumption and ensuring minimum energy efficiency standards (MEES) compliance. The result was a pre-let of the upgraded space and a stronger, more sustainable asset for the investment fund client.
RSK companies Keegans and ECD Architects supported Portsmouth City Council in transforming Wilmcote House into the UK’s first large-scale EnerPHit-standard retrofit. Originally built in 1968, the 11-storey REEMA variant tower was reaching the end of its service life. Keegans provided project management, quantity surveying and principal designer services, while ECD Architects led the sustainable design. Following early budget review and client consultation, the team redefined the brief to achieve EnerPHit certification. Works included external structural remediation, high-performance insulation, new glazing, roof upgrades and a new heating system. The retrofit significantly reduced energy use, tackled fuel poverty and extended the building’s lifespan by at least 30 years as part of the wider Somerstown regeneration.
RSK company Edge Impact supported a REIT in meeting investor expectations and aligning with the Australian Sustainability Reporting Standards (ASRS) by assessing climate exposure across its property portfolio. Using the Acclimatise tool, Edge Impact identified key physical climate risks and prioritised sites for detailed on-ground assessment. This work is helping the client comply with reporting requirements and strengthen risk-informed asset management strategies.
RSK company CS2 supported Patrizia AG in transforming Verulam Point, a 1990s office building in St Albans, into a net-zero-carbon-enabled asset. The 55,000 sq ft CAT A refurbishment included a complex cut-and-carve of the reception and communal areas. CS2 provided contract administration, project management and cost consultancy services to deliver best-in-class facilities under budget. The building’s EPC improved from D to A, attracting blue-chip and government tenants on market-leading rents while achieving ESG and decarbonisation goals.
RSK company Silcock Leedham supported the University of Nottingham in removing the Law and Social Sciences Building and Hallward Library from its ageing gas-fired district heating network. As part of the university’s carbon management plan, Silcock Leedham created detailed virtual energy models to assess upgrade and decarbonisation options, which led to the selection of an openloop ground source heat pump system. The team developed full technical designs through RIBA Stages 2 and 3, including plant and equipment schedules and electrical upgrades to the high voltage ring main. RSK business Carbon Zero Consulting provided geological feasibility, Environment Agency permit support, water features survey and borehole design.
RSK company ECD Architects supported Populo, on behalf of the London Borough of Newham, in the refurbishment of James Riley Point, upgrading 136 homes to meet the Passivhaus EnerPHit standard. The project combines deep retrofit with architectural preservation, reducing embodied carbon while enhancing community value. The transformation includes the addition of a multifunctional leisure, community and sports centre, alongside façade improvements featuring shaded balconies and glazed ceramic cladding inspired by local heritage. The redesign improves thermal performance, internal space and safety, demonstrating how sustainable retrofit can deliver both high performance and visual impact in social housing.
RSK Geosciences was appointed by Quintain to deliver specialist ground investigation services for the redevelopment of a two-storey car park into a nine-storey office and retail building at Wembley Park. Acting as principal contractor, RSK completed rotary and percussive boreholes to depths of between 30 m and 50 m, mechanical and hand-dug trial pits, geotechnical in situ and laboratory testing, geoenvironmental laboratory testing, groundwater sampling and gas and groundwater modelling to inform substructure design. Working within a constrained urban site still in use by Wembley Stadium staff, RSK managed access challenges, safety and programme delays caused by nearby events. When unexpected slab thickness hindered drilling, the team mobilised specialist equipment to continue the investigation. The final report provided the factual geotechnical and geoenvironmental data needed to progress the development design.
As our REIT client acquires new properties, RSK company Edge Impact provides ongoing climate exposure assessments across the expanding portfolio. Leveraging the Acclimatise tool and interactive visualisations, the assessments inform due diligence and help integrate climate resilience into investment decisions, supporting long-term value and sustainable asset management.
RSK company Ceetech is helping schools tackle rising energy costs and carbon reduction goals through a holistic approach to on-site renewable energy and decarbonisation. By assessing full-site energy use and infrastructure, Ceetech designs tailored systems such as solar PV and air source heat pumps that reduce operating costs and carbon emissions while supporting long-term energy resilience. Strategic installation of larger PV arrays and compatible low-carbon technologies maximises savings and payback, often exceeding 10% annually. Alongside upgrades to lighting, insulation and controls, these systems enable schools to move towards energy self-sufficiency, deliver curriculumaligned sustainability outcomes and future-proof their estates.
RSK company CS2 delivered comprehensive technical due diligence for the acquisition of Manchester’s largest office building, a 506,468 sq ft asset. Working under tight deadlines and with limited electronic data, CS2 and RSK swiftly mobilised a multidisciplinary team to assess risks, repair needs and sustainability measures, producing a detailed feasibility study and cost report to inform future investment decisions. Now leading the stripout and refurbishment, CS2 is working towards achieving BREEAM Excellent standards by recycling materials and partnering with the Salvation Army Trading Company to reduce waste and enhance sustainability outcomes.
RSK company Edge Impact worked with an Australian health and aged care provider to assess the vulnerability of its facilities to climate hazards, given the increased risks to elderly residents. Using Acclimatise, Edge Impact identified high-exposure sites and provided deeper analysis of site-specific vulnerabilities. The results are guiding climate disclosure reporting and helping the client prioritise operational support and resilience planning.
RSK company ECD Architects supported East Renfrewshire Council in assessing five school buildings to inform a phased retrofit and decarbonisation strategy. The study aligned retrofit options with maintenance plans, using 3D modelling and PHPP simulations to evaluate building performance and heat demand. ECD proposed shallow, deep and full retrofit pathways based on each building’s condition and decant needs. Recommended measures included external wall insulation, mechanical ventilation with heat recovery and airtightness upgrades. The outcome provided the council with a clear, costed road map to reduce energy use and support the integration of low-carbon technologies.
RSK company CAN Structures delivered cladding and steelwork repairs to the South Stand at Old Trafford, home of Manchester United Football Club, following concerns over corrosion affecting the canopy panel brackets. To minimise disruption to daily club operations, CAN designed a bespoke access and repair strategy using its lightweight CAN-Span platform. The modular system, adapted with side-mounted catch nets on extended outriggers, provided safe, stable access without encroaching on the field of play. Assembled in 6 m sections, the platform allowed efficient mobilisation, installation and relocation around the stand as part of the club’s ongoing maintenance plan.
RSK company CS2 provided pre- and post-contract cost management services for the £5.8 million refurbishment of Northampton Museum and Art Gallery. Working with a tight budget and the complexities of an older building, CS2 guided the project team to stay on time and within budget. The team delivered comprehensive employer’s requirements documents to support a robust tender process and delivered ongoing valuation and variation assessments. Cost-saving measures, including the reuse of existing mechanical and electrical (M&E) systems, helped maximise value. The project successfully blended historic structures with a new glazed extension, creating a cultural hub central to Northampton’s regeneration.
RSK company ECD Architects supported the London Borough of Brent in developing decarbonisation and retrofit feasibility studies across thirteen buildings at five schools. As part of the council’s drive toward a net zero estate, ECD created energy models to evaluate staged retrofit options and typical building archetypes, helping to define consistent approaches across the wider school estate. The team assessed light-touch interventions such as insulation and ventilation upgrades alongside deeper fabric improvements and low-carbon heating options, including air source heat pumps. Architectural recommendations were integrated to minimise future disruption, with support from Keegans cost consultants on indicative pricing. To complement the technical work, ECD delivered interactive climate education workshops for pupils, strengthening stakeholder engagement and awareness.
RSK company CS2 specified, tendered and projectmanaged the external restoration of a Grade II listed embassy building for the République de Côte d’Ivoire in Belgravia, London. Providing technical and contractual advice, CS2 delivered the works under budget by working closely with the landlord and negotiating with contractors. This strategic approach enabled the client to meet its external repair obligations, reduce the scope of works and achieve savings of approximately £154,000, securing a nil dilapidations claim at lease expiry.
RSK supported Countdown Property Development in the remediation of Blackamoor Lane, a former industrial landfill in Maidenhead located just metres from residential properties. The site contained over 272,000 m³ of waste and 2500 drums of contaminated liquids, making it one of the UK’s most contaminated sites. Following years of planning refusals and public inquiries, planning permission was granted by the Secretary of State. As supervising engineer, RSK worked closely with the contractor and local community to ensure transparency and safety. The successful remediation enabled the development of 448 homes and earned RSK the Brownfield Briefing Award for Best Public Participation.
