Nuclear
Nuclear energy is not only cleaner than fossil fuels, it also provides low-carbon energy to millions of people worldwide. In the European Union (EU), nuclear power plants generate 30% of all EU-produced electricity; currently, we have 130 operational reactors in 14 EU countries. Maintaining rigid EU safety guidelines is paramount to a clean future and safeguarding our planet as the numerous and adverse climate change effects become ever more prevalent. We are a leading supplier to the nuclear sector: we have worked extensively on proposed nuclear new-build developments and nuclear sites undergoing decommissioning for a wide range of clients including EDF Energy, Horizon Nuclear Power, British Energy and Magnox.
Leading by example
As one of the leading UK environmental consultancies, we are different from our competitors with our value-added systems and solutions. We have a strong, embedded health and safety culture throughout our delivery network. Since 2008, we have undertaken all-encompassing phased ground investigations for EDF Energy at Hinkley Point in Somerset, Sizewell C in Suffolk and Bradwell B in Essex, and for Horizon Nuclear Power at Wylfa on Anglesey, all in the UK. We were the first UK ground investigation contractor to embrace and roll out behavioural safety training to all employees and specialist subcontractors employed on our nuclear sites.
Diverse services to serve EU energy policies
RSK offers its nuclear industry services through Structural Soils and RSK Radiological, a joint venture between RSK and the US-based decommissioning expert Radiation Safety and Control Services Inc. It is the only company in the world to have decommissioned three nuclear power sites to greenfield status. We focus primarily on ground investigations to support UK decommissioning. Our services range from phase ground investigations to undertaking specialist and complex contracts, which includes in-house in-situ and laboratory testing. Our experience has helped to create a specialist and comprehensive in-house geotechnical testing laboratory. Our radiological and non-radiological site investigations have supported our clients building nuclear power stations, securing site licences and with environmental permitting. We have developed radiological fingerprints, which is paramount when decommissioning a site.
Prioritising health and safety
The EU promotes the highest health and safety standards for all types of civilian nuclear activity. At RSK, it is our belief that this focus should support the clientโs focus on safety management during environmental, health and safety service provision. Our commitment to health, safety, environment and quality management is underpinned by our group certification to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 for our integrated health, safety, environment and quality systems. All our employees complete an in-house behaviour performance and safety training course, which is managed and led by our specialist radiological team.
Decades of knowledge and experience
Our clients often come to us seeking assurances of health, safety and quality and a strategy delivered by a company with a proven track record. The fact that we have worked on small- and large-scale projects (to ยฃ8 million individually or up to ยฃ20 million for phased works at Wylfa) means that we evolve with each project and make huge leaps in terms of our technical, quality and reporting standards. Furthermore, the sensitive nature of working on such sites has encouraged us to make major investments in health and safety standards, materially and culturally.
Enduring relationships
Our clients aim to maintain the highest health and safety standards on their projects. Our global track record and award-winning group companies ensure that we are the ideal partner to take a project forward or help with decommissioning. We are your trusted partner and will guide you through every step of your project.
