Southern Ecological Solutions (SES), formed in 2007 and based in Essex in South East England, is a specialist ecological and arboricultural company. It has around 50 staff, including experts in landscape management, arboriculturists and ecologists, and works on ecologically led development projects in conjunction with conservation charities, national builders, industry and government throughout the UK.

SES has an in-house commercial contracting business unit that undertakes arboricultural and ecological contracting, enabling the team to take a project from design to on-site delivery. All its consultants are expert project managers and understand the need to identify and define the needs of clients and put in place the correct strategy to meet them.

The in-house arboriculture surveying team offers a complete portfolio of services, including BS 5837:2012 tree surveys for planning purposes, arboricultural impact assessments, arboricultural method statements and all associated tree surgery works. It also offers post planning permission services such as monitoring and protection of trees during the demolition or construction process, as well as advice on managing trees protected by Tree Preservation Orders or those within conservation areas that are either directly or indirectly affected by proposed works. Other related services include risk assessments, planting plans and specifications, veteran and ancient tree protection and felling licences.

SES’s ecology services offer a full range of requirements. Strategic project services for developers promoting strategic land are employed for nationally recognised schemes and are a key offering. Further strategy-related services include due diligence reports, land appraisals, expert witness services and habitat design and creation. Ecological surveys are also available and include desk studies, scoping surveys, ecological impact assessments and adherence to the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) and Code for Sustainable Homes (CSH), both industry quality standards that are used to assess the environmental performance of new and existing buildings.

Landscape planning and design services are offered, with a complementary range of skills to see projects through from conception to completion. Services include site selection and feasibility, local plan promotion, planning applications, design and implementation and management.

SES has previously undertaken large-scale projects for clients such as HS2, The Crown Estate, RSPB, national UK builders and the Church of England.
