PB Drilling
PB Drilling, founded in 1989 and based in Wigan, UK, is a leading ground investigation subcontractor, providing services nationwide. It works mainly within the construction sector, offering a range of drilling, sampling and coring capabilities.
Key services offered by PB Drilling include cable percussion drilling (also known as shell and auger drilling), a commonly used technique for drilling and sampling soils where good quality undisturbed samples are required. This method is suited to all types of soil and weak rocks, providing a rapid and cost-effective method of investigation to depths of up to 60 metres. The company can also install casing inside the boreholes to prevent loose soil collapsing into the hole, enabling the borehole to be advanced to considerable depths, so standard penetration tests (SPT) can be carried out. On completion of the borehole it is backfilled and the ground surface reinstated, leaving little or no disturbance to the working area.
Handheld windowless sampling is offered to clients for sites where access is restricted, preventing the use of drilling rigs. This system enables samples to be recovered using the same tubes as a mini rig. It consists of a handheld hydraulic breaker with a separate power pack and has been used successfully on slopes of up to 25 degrees.
Window sample drilling services (often referred to as a mini rig) can be provided on sites that are too restricted for cable percussion drilling and require a compact self-contained rig that can be manoeuvred under its own power into locations with difficult access. The rig can also be used on gently sloping sites that may not be accessible for the cable percussion rig.
Other services provided include dynamic probing, equipment hire and supply and water well drilling.
