Headland Archaeology, founded in 1996, provides heritage services to the development and construction sectors. Its team has an in-depth understanding of commercial archaeology with practical experience of participating in major construction projects. The team covers the whole of the UK and Ireland. Contracting and post-excavation services are based in four regional offices located in Luton, Hereford, Leeds and Edinburgh; the consultancy team is based in a number of RSK offices, including Manchester, Bristol, Helsby, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

From fast-track rail projects and wind farm construction through to housing developments and offshore cable-laying, Headland delivers against critical path and client heritage responsibilities and is a Chartered Institute for Archaeologists Registered Organisation.

Headland’s consultancy team has an established track record in providing advice on cultural heritage matters and can provide input to all stages of development, from appraisal through to delivery of the consented application, and from initial feasibility studies to environmental impact assessments, expert witness services and the implementation of mitigation measures.

The Headland contracting team is focused on delivering archaeological services in advance of construction work, focusing on designing projects that meet clients’ requirements while reducing and managing financial risk and delays on development programmes. Services can include a range of pre- and post-planning determination services such as geophysical surveys, field-walking, metal-detecting, topographic surveys, coring and historic building recording, as well as trial trenching, excavation and watching briefs. Headland’s post-excavation services include palaeoenvironmental and finds analysis, osteoarchaeology, geomatics and geoarchaeology.

The company is on multiple frameworks across the UK in many different sectors and has gained particular experience in large infrastructure schemes including road, rail and grid. It also has a long involvement in the field of renewable energy and to date, has been involved in over 150 wind farms and several biomass and energy-from-waste plants. Services cover on- and offshore developments and as the solar energy sector is growing fast, it has developed a bespoke report (sub-environmental impact assessment) and the expertise to offer services that directly address the planning needs of these developments. Outside of infrastructure and the renewables sector, Headland Archaeology regularly works in housing and commercial property, opencast collieries, quarries, utilities, onshore cable laying and masterplanning projects.
