AJ Engineering & Construction Services and Northern Engineering & Welding Co Ltd (NEWCo) have bases in Forres and Fort William, Scotland. Operating UK-wide, they are supply chain providers for infrastructure development projects with a specialism in fabrication and installation. As well as steel fabrication, they undertake works involving steel erection, building envelope cladding installation, mechanical installation and maintenance and computer numerical control (CNC) precision machining.

AJ Engineering and NEWCo work across a wide variety of sectors, assisting clients within the rail, defence, renewables, nuclear, water, construction, oil and gas and marine industries, and are more recently diversifying across a wide spectrum of businesses requiring precision-built parts.

Fabrication services are provided, with facilities and capabilities enabling the businesses to work with a range of materials including carbon steel, stainless steel and aluminium, with over 39 different weld procedures that are constantly reviewed and controlled by in-house welding inspectors. All fabrication and welding is carried out in accordance with client specifications or international standards.

Bridges and related structures are a key service offering, particularly within the rail, road and river sectors. The businesses are able to design, manufacture, paint and install a range of steel structures such as access for all (AFA) bridges, girders, U desk bridges, overhead line equipment (OLE) gantries and station steelwork. AJ Engineering is certified by the Steelwork Construction Certification Scheme (SCCS) and are RISQS accredited, allowing the businesses to install new bridges and structures in a live railway environment. NEWCo also certified by the SCCS.

Steelwork and cladding services are offered to the construction sector for various structural steelwork and cladding projects. As multidisciplinary contractors, the companies are able to offer clients structural steelwork, cladding, doors and all secondary metalwork under one contract. An in-house automated Ficep cut and drill line enables them to utilise 3-axis drilling to process steelwork.

A diverse range of energy transmission products and services can be delivered for projects in the UK energy sector, such as wind farms, substations, hydro schemes and battery energy storage systems.

NEWCo specialises in all types of welding, fabrication and mechanical engineering and is also a major steel stockist. With a purpose built and well-equipped workshop and skilled technicians, its services are facilitated by an in-house machine shop. The production facility encompasses welding (MIG, TIG, MMA), rolling, shearing, punching, bending and plasma profiling facilities. Its machine section includes lathes and milling, slotting and sawing facilities, all of which can be supported by in-house computer-aided design (CAD) drawing facilities.

Experienced site service teams are available, helping to minimise and mitigate production facility downtime. Repairs can be made to industrial equipment and scanning, measuring and fabrication of secondary steelwork and pipework, reverse engineering of high-volume parts in rotational and moving industrial equipment, planned and reactive maintenance and mechanical installation of new equipment are all covered.

Computer numerical control (CNC) machining services are provided in-house, ideally suited for the manufacture of remotely operated vehicle (ROV) tooling, drilling tools, shafts, rollers and equipment for various processing plants. The machinery is equipped with the latest computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) programming and inspection technologies.

AJ Engineering and NEWCo work within ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001. Some of their clients and projects include JN Bentley (United Utilities), Morgan Sindall and in conjunction with BAM Nuttall, The Discovery Building, a new world-class scientific facility at Rothera Research Station, Antarctica, operated by the British Antarctic Survey.
