Harnessing the immense power of the sun
In the UK, solar power is the third most generated renewable energy after wind power and biomass, accounting for 3.4% of Britain’s total electricity generation. RSK is committed to developing clean energy and helping the UK meet its zero-emissions targets.
A BAE Systems-proposed solar farm, on a 6.2-ha site, requiring a landscape and visual impact appraisal offered RSK an opportunity to showcase its diversity and commitment to clean energy. Our programme of work included identifying viewpoints, photographing the site, undertaking a baseline appraisal, writing an assessment of the potential landscape and visual effects, and considering landscape and visual mitigation measures and the development’s relationship with the mitigation measures proposed for the adjacent Lancashire Enterprise Zone.
After submitting a planning application to the South Ribble Borough Council, we provided support to the planning agent to ensure that it was satisfied that the development would be contained visually and the proposed mitigation measures were sufficient. The solar farm received unanimous approval and is now operational. BAE Systems reports that the solar farm has prevented over a million kilogrammes of carbon being released into the atmosphere and saved £300,000 in energy costs.
