Exploring innovative remediation solutions
Vopak Terminal Eurotank is a tank storage terminal in Antwerp, Belgium. The site is ATEX-rated or explosive sensitive. Parts of the site were contaminated with volatile total petroleum hydrocarbons and chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons, which are deadly to the environment and human health. To reduce the risks, Vopak worked with RSK to demonstrate the effectiveness and cost, time and energy efficiency of an innovative, in-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) remediation technique. ISCO is a form of oxidation technology commonly used for soil and groundwater remediation. Strong chemical oxidisers are injected into the affected area to destroy contaminants.
The mixture of chemical contaminants at the terminal made remediation a challenge: each contaminant had different chemical and physical characteristics, so effective work required a specific oxidising agent. RSK collaborated with a local agency to source a suitable agent. The solution worked and contaminant mitigation zones in the aquifer were treated.
RSK began pilot tests by producing an extensive health and safety plan, which covered all safety-related aspects of using ISCO in an ATEX-rated area. On-site health and safety specialists implemented health and safety plans and safety measures throughout the project. Using the data from the tests, our specialists designed a full-scale detailed remediation plan, which aimed to minimise on-site disruption. The ongoing project continues to assess the technique’s effectiveness for various locations and compare its cost and efficiency with conventional techniques.
