Cleaning up a former gas works
An industrial site in Kent, UK, formerly a gasworks and precast concrete production site, was found to be contaminated with asbestos, petroleum hydrocarbons, metals and volatile organic compounds. Some underground structures from the former gasworks were also still present. Ecologia, an RSK company, successfully completed the remediation of the site over 14 months.
Ecologia assessed the contamination and advised the client on suitable remediation strategies. The presence of light non-aqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) contamination on site prompted the client to undertake in-situ multiphase extraction remediation before planning permission was granted. More than 4000 L of LNAPL was removed successfully from the site. An integrated approach to the remediation was provided, including bulk excavation, hot spot removal and water treatment, in conjunction with early demolition works.
The movement of materials on site was tracked meticulously under a materials management plan, incorporating the transfer of naturally occurring soils required to make up for shortages following off-site disposal of unsuitable soils. Regulatory sign-off was achieved promptly thanks to a robust validation and verification scheme underpinning remediation works.
