Building hospitals and helping communities in Hampshire
Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a semi-autonomous healthcare service within the NHS. The Trust provides healthcare to a population of 600,000 in Hampshire and parts of west Berkshire. To meet public expectations, the Trust planned to build a critical treatment hospital, a cancer treatment centre and supporting hospital services. Architectural firm Stride Treglown, on behalf of the Trust, commissioned RSK to provide landscape planning support and produce a landscape and visual impact assessment of the proposed developments. RSK’s work was paramount for gaining planning consent from Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council.
RSK’s landscape design and masterplanning team wrote the relevant chapter of the environmental statement, which was submitted with the planning application to the local council. The team’s baseline analysis of the local landscape character and local visual amenity influenced Stride Treglown’s detailed landscape masterplan for the site. Particular attention was given to the structural planting on the boundary of the site. Walkover surveys identified opportunities to offset some of unfavourable visual aspects of the development. In October 2015, Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council issued planning consent.
