Accessibility improvements to grade II listed building
Hendon Town Hall, in north London, was built in 1901. RSK was appointed to provided design, contract administration and project management services for the refurbishment of the Grade II listed building to meet the modern demands of the local authority while respecting the heritage of the building and the civic functions it performs. The work involved refurbishing the civic space, which included the open plan reception, mayoral suite and council chamber. A heritage room was dedicated to the display of civic regalia and the committee room was enlarged to increase its capacity to 120 people.
RSK improved building facilities and access by installing a regulatory compliant lift, assisted-door-opening devices and hearing loops and enhanced the provision of accessible toilets. Wireless technology was used to reduce the impact of the work on the building, including installing a wireless conferencing system and WiFi access. To improve the building’s sustainability, existing light fittings were converted to low-energy ones, water management devices were fitted in toilets and 100% off site recycling was achieved by using a specialist waste recycling contractor.
