RSK has won the prize for the Best International Project at this year’s Brownfield Awards, hosted by Environment Analyst. The award presented to RSK recognises the achievements of the Technology Transfer and Export of Remediation Knowledge to Africa project.
The Brownfield Awards 2021, held on 14 October, brought people together from across the environmental industry to “recognise the outstanding achievements made by individuals and organisations” in the contaminated land and brownfield sector. On the night, RSK was named as a joint winner of the Best International Project category, which aims to recognise “excellence in any aspect of brownfield remediation or development” for projects outside the UK.
RSK’s project involved 12 international business units: Central Alliance, Ecologia, RSK Italia, RemedX, RSK Geosciences, Structural Soils, RSK Raw, RSK Middle East, RSK GCS, RSK Netherlands, RSK Benelux and CJ Associates, that each brought its own skills and expertise to support the remediation of over 30 fuel retail sites and depots in the region of East Africa. The project employed over 100 East Africans to support the work and provided them with skills and training. To successfully complete the project, which included the removal of underground fuel storage tanks, the drilling of remedial wells and the operation and maintenance of in-situ remediation systems, RSK spent 4000 days sharing the knowledge and skills needed to carry out the project with the 100 East African scientists and engineers. This knowledge sharing and the export of technology enabled the team to safely complete the work within a tight timescale of 15 months from being awarded the contract to its completion.
The project’s success has resulted in the establishment of three regional RSK businesses with permanent office bases that continue to work and employ local engineers in the region. The teams are part of the RSK family of businesses and continue to provide environmental services in East Africa.
