Structural Soils goes green with environmentally friendly fuel

December 22, 2021

Structural Soils, an RSK group company, has gone the extra mile with a push on sustainability as it has switched to an environmentally friendly fuel to power its drilling rigs and plant on site. The business, which specialises in site investigation, is now using hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) fuel in place of red diesel to reduce the environmental impact of its business operations.

Structural Soils was first introduced to Green D HVO+, a ‘green’ diesel substitute, in September by one of its primary plant and tool suppliers, Speedy. “Green D HVO+ is a hydrotreated vegetable oil with additives that answers many of the criticisms levelled at earlier biodiesels. The chemistry of the product is different from first generation biodiesels and it is entirely sourced from 100% renewable and sustainable waste-derived raw materials”, explains Structural Soils Managing Director Stephen Mackereth.

Structural Soils trialled the new HVO fuel at its Avonmouth, UK, depot in October, where over a period of four weeks it was used in multiple types of drilling rigs and support plant. There have been no detrimental effects and lots of good environmental reasons to extend past the initial trial period, so the team is now using the product wherever it can on site to replace red diesel.

“A bonus is that it is also a ‘drop-in’ fuel (so can be mixed with regular diesel) and it is approved by all major plant engine manufacturers, so no engine modifications or other adaptations to plant are required! Most importantly, it represents a 90% reduction in carbon dioxide, an up to 30% reduction in nitrous oxide and an up to 86% reduction in particulates compared to standard diesel.”

The change is a fantastic step in the business’s sustainability push and greatly reduces its emissions footprint. And that is not all; the team is also looking at the potential of switching to a white version of HVO fuel for diesel-powered road vehicles next year, which would further reduce the business’s emissions footprint in line with RSK’s carbon reduction targets and science-based targets (SBTi) initiative.

🤔 Should businesses offer free period products to staff?

We think they should!

💚 We decided to trial this at our offices, offering pads, panty liners and tampons for free. What’s more, all products on offer (and their packaging) are made from sustainable materials.

What do you think of this initiative?
