Sonic rig lives up to its name

Structural Soils (an RSK company) is pleased to announce the expansion of its fleet with the addition of its first sonic drilling rig.

The rig, which is based on the Comachio GEO 602, completed its first assignment, drilling three 35-m-deep boreholes through some of the most challenging ground conditions Structural Soils has experienced – a hard glacial boulder clay containing cobbles and boulders of gneiss and granite up to 400 mm in diameter. Individual 1.5 m runs were completed in 2–3 minutes, so the rig is proving to be as super speedy and efficient as its hedgehog namesake.

The rig benefits from a dedicated rotary head in addition to the sonic head, which will allow it to core through the sonic section of boreholes to depths in excess of 150 m, adding new capabilities to the company’s portfolio of services.

Speaking about the new rig, Steve Mackereth, Structural Soils Managing Director, said: “In addition to providing Structural Soils with enhanced capability, the new rig will also bring many benefits to clients and open new service opportunities. The new rig has already proved itself as an extremely efficient machine by working on extremely difficult ground conditions.”
