RSK group signs ‘Make it Mandatory’ pledge

October 26, 2022

RSK group has joined more than 330 businesses and corporations as a signatory of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) COP15 business statement ‘Make it Mandatory’ pledge. By signing the pledge, RSK group has made a commitment to protect and restore nature, while advocating that it be made a requirement for businesses to report against the Global Biodiversity Framework.

The Global Biodiversity Framework is set to be published at COP15, the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity taking place in Montreal, Canada on 7–19 December 2022. The framework outlines milestones to help protect and restore biodiversity around the globe by 2030 and achieve ‘harmony with nature’ by 2050. In the framework, there is an onus on business and financial institutions to take real action towards better understanding, and ultimately managing, their relationship with nature.

The COP15 business statement aims to bring this need for action into focus. “Climate change is just one symptom of our unsustainable use of the Earth’s natural resources. Businesses need to understand, and disclose, how they rely on and impact nature,” said Dr Stephanie Wray, RSK Group Chief Sustainability Officer. “Introductions of mandatory reporting and disclosures will not only offer a means to better understand business dependencies on nature but also how to enact change,” she continued.

Following the publication of its second Biodiversity Report Card assessing the Asian markets’ relationship with nature, Nature Positive, an RSK group company, found that only 4% of companies in the region highlight biodiversity and nature as a priority. The signatories of the ‘Make it Mandatory’ pledge aim to change this by bringing the biodiversity crisis to the forefront of the business agenda. In encouraging national governments to introduce policies that make it a requirement for reporting against nature to be completed, the business statement aims to protect and restore biodiversity loss through business actions.
