Prestigious award win for RSK business MWH Treatment

July 08, 2022

RSK company MWH Treatment are celebrating after winning a prestigious award.

The business’ Edale Mill Cottages project won the respected Institution of Civil Engineers’ East Midlands Merit Award at the ICE EMMA Ceremony, which was held in Nottingham on Friday, June 10.

Presented annually, the awards celebrate all aspects of civil engineering and are presented to the best civil engineering projects, people and groundbreaking research across Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire and Nottinghamshire.

The combined team from MWHT, key supplier CAN Geotechnical and client, Severn Trent received their Merit award in the Small Projects Category.

The Edale Mill Cottages project, serves a small community comprising 29 properties in which the asset expired biofilter works and septic tank was both process and hydraulically undersized and had been a source of odour complaints for the close neighbours for a number of years.

Complications for the project’s delivery were additionally posed by a small site footprint and its location next to the steep riverbank of the River Noe, which had ongoing issues of erosion, threatening the viability of the works and its access track.

MWHT supported Severn Trent early in the project life delivering an outline design through Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) to provide a new works with low visual and operational impact for the local community and National Park visitors alike, both during and after construction.

The team selected a rotating biological contractor (RBC) process solution. RSK specialist CAN Geotechnical were engaged to design and deliver a  soil nailing/rock anchor ground stabilisation with natural hemp netting above a riprap base for the riverbank.

Engaging both the neighbours adjacent to the narrow access and wider local community was essential for the effective delivery and the team was recognised by Severn Trent with a Customer Excellence Award.

Adrian Green, MWH Treatment’s Regional Director, said “Well done to project manager Andy Guy and the whole team involved in this project.

It is down to their hard work and dedication that the project has been recognised by both the ICE and the Client.”

💧 Actively restoring rivers by reinstating natural river processes will play a vital role in helping offset the global freshwater biodiversity crisis.
