Nature Positive invited to join TNFD Forum

March 18, 2022

Nature Positive, an RSK company, has been accepted by the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) to join its global forum. Nature Positive joins 300 other leading institutions as part of the multidisciplinary consultative group to develop a nature-related risk framework.

Established in July 2020, the TNFD is a risk management and disclosure framework for organisations to report and act on nature-related risks. All businesses rely on and impact the natural world in some way, either directly through their day-to-day business activities or indirectly through their value chains. The TNFD aims to ensure that businesses have a positive impact on the natural world by focusing global financial flows towards “nature-positive outcomes” and away from “nature-negative outcomes”.

Members of the forum will support the development and delivery of the framework, and these include private companies, financial institutions, academic and research organisations, inter-governmental groups and conservation organisations.

Nature Positive recently published a Biodiversity Report Card, which found that almost half of the FTSE 100 companies do not reference biodiversity in their annual reports and therefore may not have access to information to help them understand how their business operations rely on or impact nature. The TNFD aims to address this challenge and provides companies and financial institutions with better information to enable them to make informed decisions that take nature-related risks and opportunities into account.

“Being a member of the forum will give us the opportunity to support the development of the framework and test any methodologies or tools,” said Dr Rossa Donovan, Technical Director at Nature Positive. “When the TNFD is officially launched, we will be in a strong position to support clients with identifying the impacts and dependencies their business operations have on nature. We will assess the financial risks and opportunities that these bring and provide the companies with TNFD disclosure reports, strategies, targets and action plans to reduce their risks and enhance their opportunities.”

The beta version of the framework launched in March 2022 and the team at Nature Positive will be submitting its comments and suggestions for improvements. It is anticipated that the final version of the TNFD framework will launch in September 2023.
