Laser scanning Birmingham’s ageing tower blocks

August 12, 2019

Central Alliance (an RSK company) has used its vast scanning and monitoring experience to produce building elevations for 40 Birmingham high-rise buildings due for renovation. The development of high-rise, or tower buildings, in Birmingham, UK, was most active during the post-war development phase of the 1960s. The towers are now either being demolished or renovated.

Central Alliance mobilized its survey personnel and state-of-the-art laser equipment to scan the various tower blocks and transferred the data to its head office for post-processing and elevation drafting.

A project of this scale, with so many buildings, was always going to bring with it several challenges. Not least was having to undertake work in the worst of the British weather to meet deadlines. However, despite the significant pressures to complete work on time, work efficiencies and succinct planning ensured that the project was processed smoothly. Central Alliance was able to provide a full one-stop service with all processes handled in-house. The project also took the client a step closer to the Scan2BIM solution that the construction industry now demands.
