Business Development Partner Nigel Goddard, of RSK business Pellings, has been doing his bit to support his local community during the coronavirus pandemic.
Nigel is the Chair of Trustees for a charity local to the Pellings Bromley, UK, office, UK, called Evergreen Care Bexley, which acts in response to the needs of older vulnerable people living in its community. They provide a range of support services to reduce loneliness and isolation in the community for the over 65s. The charity has 600 clients and a staff of 64 plus 147 volunteers.
The charity has had to face the challenges associated with the coronavirus pandemic for their elderly client base and for keeping the charity afloat and functioning. It has managed to secure emergency funding via the local authority, crowd funding and other means. Nigel’s wife has also set up a telephone befriending service that matches volunteers with isolated elderly people in the borough that should reach its 150th match this month.
“This has not been without its heartaches. Many clients feel they have little to live for and some have passed away,” comments Nigel. “The volunteers all have very different jobs and daily lives but are coming together to support the wider community throughout these difficult times.”
The volunteers call about three times a week to check in and find out about extra support the vulnerable residents might need. But, more than anything, they provide comfort throughout these often-lonely times.
As well as helping others, volunteering can help you to feel a sense of accomplishment, and we all need a bit of feel good right now!
