Employee Spotlight: September

September 30, 2022
Claire Knighton, Divisional Director, celebrated her 25-year anniversary at RSK on 28 July. To mark this astounding achievement, we asked Claire to reflect on her time with RSK and the future of the team she leads.

“I started at the lab in 1997 as a graduate chemist, pretty fresh out of university. Not long after graduating, I saw an advert in the paper for a role at ENSR, an environmental consulting, engineering and remediation company. I loved the look of the role and was offered the job. I was an analytical chemist, working with only three other people in the lab at that time.

“ENSR became RSK ENSR and then Envirolab was formed; that’s when I started working with the wider RSK business.

“I quickly worked my way up; after 18 months, I became the lab manager and soon after that I was asked to become a director. The company grew and grew, and so did the services we offered. Before we knew it, we were doing all the testing for RSK businesses and soon expanded to offer services to external clients as well.

“In 2013, I took on the role of divisional director. I was determined to create a culture of openness and honesty in the team, so we dedicated a lot of time to team building and workshops. Even though we were all so different, we became a very tight team, driving the business forward by utilising our strengths in the best way possible.”

On what Claire is most proud of:

“Opening the inorganic lab was a huge achievement for the team and me. Seeing the growth of the lab and the team over the years has been incredible. When I started in the role of divisional director, we had a very small technical service offering. We worked hard to make sure we had the right people in the right positions and despite the monumental growth, we managed to keep the same close-knit, collaborative culture. Now, after that investment, we have a comprehensive and integrated technical provision that is only growing in strength and proficiency.”

Any advice for women wanting to get into the industry?

“My advice to other women, especially those in typically male-dominated industries, is to be really genuine. Forget the stereotypes of what a leader should be. Leadership needs more caring, collaborative and empathetic people.”

And the year ahead:

“I’m looking forward to seeing change and growth of the business and of the people within the business. We embrace change here at RSK – it’s what is exciting about working here and why we’ve enjoyed so many successful years. I’m looking forward to seeing the amazing people we have across the team grow and develop and to welcoming new businesses into the family.”

Congratulations, Claire on your 25 years with RSK.
