Climate resilience
Building water systems for climate resilience
As the climate crisis accelerates, the water sector faces increasing pressures from flooding, droughts and combined sewer overflows (CSO). RSK is at the forefront of developing climate-resilient water systems that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, conserve resources and build adaptive capacity for the future.
Through a combination of cutting-edge technology, nature-based solutions and circular economy principles, we deliver strategies that safeguard communities and ecosystems while enhancing water system efficiency. At RSK, climate resilience means more than addressing todayβs challenges β itβs about building water systems that thrive in a changing world.
Tackling climate impacts with resilient solutions
The water sector must navigate dual challenges: mitigating immediate climate impacts while preparing for long-term sustainability. Flood management, drought resilience and CSO mitigation require innovative approaches that balance environmental stewardship with operational effectiveness.
RSKβs holistic approach integrates advanced technologies and sustainable practices, ensuring that every solution addresses current risks and future demands. From real-time monitoring systems to sustainable drainage systems (SuDS), our methods protect both infrastructure and the natural world.
RSKβs expertise in climate-resilient water solutions
RSK leads the way in delivering adaptive, environmentally responsible solutions across the water sector. Our expertise spans the full project life cycle, from design and construction to operational management. By adopting advanced technologies and integrating sustainable practices, we continue to pioneer adaptive and environmentally responsible solutions.
Flood resilience is at the core of RSKβs climate solutions. Advanced hydraulic modelling, real-time monitoring and nature-based strategies such as SuDS protect homes, businesses and ecosystems.
One example is the Keadby Terminal Assisted Outfall Sustainment project, which modernised a critical pumping station. Through the reuse of existing structures, the project protected homes, businesses and agricultural land, achieving Β£12 million in cost savings and reducing the carbon footprint by 90%.
Reliable water supply during droughts is critical. RSK delivers innovative recycling systems, optimised networks and demand management strategies. Our work on Singaporeβs Deep Tunnel Sewerage System demonstrates how reclaimed water can meet potable demands sustainably.
RSK mitigates the environmental impacts of CSOs with advanced hydraulic modelling, real-time monitoring and engineering expertise. Strategies include the design of CSO storage facilities, sewer capacity enhancement and green infrastructure integration.
Our collaboration with Severn Trent Water focuses on reducing the regionβs most problematic CSOs. This initiative improves wastewater resilience, ensures environmental compliance and protects ecosystems.
RSK integrates sustainability and carbon reduction strategies into every project. From renewable energy integration to carbon management strategies, our solutions reduce greenhouse gas emissions and optimise energy use.
By conducting carbon assessments and implementing technologies such as solar power and biogas recovery, RSK ensures projects align with global climate goals. These initiatives deliver sustainable infrastructure that balances immediate needs with long-term environmental stewardship.
RSK enhances energy efficiency in wastewater treatment through advanced technologies and process optimisation. Aeration, a traditionally energy-intensive process, is improved with high-efficiency blowers and optimised control systems, significantly reducing energy use.
Additionally, anaerobic digestion systems recover biogas from sludge, converting it into renewable energy to power operations. This circular energy approach minimises reliance on external energy sources while contributing to carbon-neutral objectives.
RSK applies circular economy principles to reduce waste and maximise resource recovery in water projects. Refurbishing and reusing infrastructure reduces carbon emissions and supports long-term sustainability.
This approach transforms wastewater into a resource by recovering byproducts such as biogas and nutrients, minimising environmental impact and creating value for clients.
RSK integrates nature-based solutions into water management to enhance resilience and biodiversity. Restoring wetlands, reforesting areas and implementing SuDS reduce flood risks, improve water quality and create habitats for wildlife.
The Chester Wetland Centre demonstrates this approach, creating educational wetland habitats, improving water quality and generating significant biodiversity gains. Similarly, RSKβs work with Nature North promotes investable solutions that drive nature recovery, support coastal and estuarine environments and enhance urban liveability.
