University of Greenwich students gained valuable real-world experience earlier this year when they spent the day capturing content at RSK’s Energy Transition Cup event.

Designed to bring teams from across the energy sector together for a day of competitive mixed six-a-side football, collaboration and charitable giving, the RSK Energy Transition Cup was held at Charlton Athletic FC. This annual event supports National Energy Action, a charity working to end fuel poverty in the UK.

The opportunity, which marks another chapter in RSK’s long-standing partnership with the University of Greenwich that began in 2023, saw students Halimat Yusuf and Mikolaj Prostak join members of RSK’s Marketing and Communications department at the event.

Developing key skills through interviews and teamwork

Halimat, who is studying for a master’s in electrical and electronic engineering, said the day helped develop her communication and social skills.

She said: β€œAfter being briefed by members of the team, we got to work filming content. I interviewed lots of different people, including CEO of National Energy Action Adam Scorer, as well as RSK Group Board Director Sarah Mogford.

β€œBeing able to collaborate with the other student from Greenwich was fantastic. We were able to learn from one another and share ideas. The experience has encouraged me to look at pursuing opportunities with organisations that are committed to making a meaningful difference, whether that involves tackling environmental, social or other important challenges.

β€œIt was an inspiring day, and it was clear that everyone involved was passionate about tackling fuel poverty, while also enjoying the event.”

Creative storytelling skills put into practice at industry event

Film and television student Mikolaj Prostak said opportunities to work at events such as the RSK Energy Transition Cup are vital because they provide hands-on experience that cannot be gained through essays and lectures alone.

Mikolaj added: β€œExperiences like this help inform career decisions by providing first-hand insight into different roles and a more rounded understanding of the work than study alone can offer.

β€œOn the day, we had to be constantly aware of what was happening around us and identify the people and activities that would make engaging content, while building a coherent narrative.

β€œWhat I enjoyed most was the opportunity to use my creative skills. Being able to apply them with a degree of creative freedom was both exciting and important to me as a film student.”

Students praised for producing high-quality social media content

RSK Digital Project Specialist Zainub Shazad said the charity competition provided an excellent opportunity to expose students to a large-scale event and give them the chance to connect with professionals from a range of disciplines.

She added: β€œCollaborating with the University of Greenwich was a fantastic way to involve students in the RSK Energy Transition Cup.

β€œHalimat and Mikolaj produced high-quality social media content while gaining valuable real-world experience in a fast-paced event environment. I hope they also gained insight into the networking opportunities these events can offer and had the chance to connect with colleagues from across RSK.”

Education and industry working together to support future careers

University of Greenwich Partnerships Relationship Manager Yvette Fofah said work experience provides students with invaluable opportunities to develop confidence, practical skills and a deeper understanding of the world of work.

She added: β€œBy fostering wider partnerships with organisations such as RSK, we have been able to create meaningful experiences that broaden aspirations, enhance employability and equip young people with the knowledge and networks they need to thrive in their future careers.”

As RSK continues to strengthen its relationship with the University of Greenwich, experiences such as the RSK Energy Transition Cup demonstrate how collaboration between industry and education can benefit everyone involved. By connecting students with real projects, people and challenges, the partnership is helping to prepare the workforce of tomorrow.
