RSK network bridges gap between early careers colleagues and senior leadership allies

A young professionals network has been established at RSK with the goal of inspiring colleagues and ensuring they feel connected and confident as they shape their journey with the group.

Graduate Environmental Consultant Isabelle Nuttall and Assistant Biologist Ellie Postlethwaite work at RSK Group companies RSK Environment and RSK Biocensus respectively and were both on the RSK Graduate Scheme. They put a plan together to create a space for fellow early careers colleagues, as suggested by their early careers manager.

Isabelle said: “Hybrid working had become the norm, and it was clear to us that early careers colleagues were struggling to build connections and confidence in the workplace. We set up the page on RSK’s internal system, which enabled us to learn so much more about the challenges young professionals were facing. It highlighted a clear need for more networking and development opportunities.

“We eventually formalised our efforts by setting up the RSK Young Professionals Network with a structured aim, objectives and committee.”

Isabelle, who is also chair of the network, said allies play an integral role in its success: “They bring invaluable experience, encouragement and perspective. Bridging the gap between early careers professionals and more experienced colleagues creates a culture where learning and development can truly thrive.

“When allies take the time to share their journeys, listen and mentor others, it has a real impact on helping young professionals to feel seen, supported and motivated to grow within RSK. I also believe the relationship is a two-way exchange, with allies benefiting just as much as members.

“Ultimately, allies help us turn the network from a community into a movement, one that strengthens inclusion, connection and shared success across the group.”

Associate Technical Director Dr Paul McMahon works at RSK Geosciences and is an ally of the Young Professionals Network. He said the sharing of ideas and experience sparks innovation and generates confidence for young professionals, so it is only fitting that colleagues across the RSK Group support them as much as they can.

Paul added: “By facilitating young professionals in meetings and during webinar sessions, you allow them to develop their own strategies and ponder a variety of options, which supports their personal development and leadership skills. Sitting back and being a supportive voice when needed can offer significant personal stimulation that often sparks thoughts in your own mind for related business areas, all leading to enhanced performance across RSK.”

This year will mark the first in-person event of the Young Professionals Network as it launches officially. Isabelle hopes it will be one of many as the network looks to hold more localised meet-ups and events with the support of senior leaders from across the business.

Moving forward, the network will continue to be shaped by members’ needs. Isabelle said that with the challenges young professionals face differing across teams and businesses, it is vital that the network develops ways to offer consistent support where local resources might be limited.

She added: “A key focus for the future is greater collaboration, both with other early careers and employee networks across RSK and with external young professional communities. By bringing young people’s voices to more spaces, we can contribute to the future of our work and industries.

“As the network expands and our committee increases in size, I’d like to see our community grow as we continue to empower the next generation of RSK talent.”
