Meet the pre-construction manager making a difference on and off the job
Lee Binks joined RSK Group company AJ Engineering more than eight years ago as a business development representative before becoming pre-construction manager, a role created especially for him.
How a newly created role is helping support growth across key sectors
Before joining the business, Lee worked as a coatings inspector before moving into supply chain management and business development. His proactive approach and drive impressed the team and secured him a position at AJ Engineering.
Lee said: βAfter six years as a business development representative, the business created the role of pre-construction manager for me. This enables the business to support the growing demand in the UK transmission and water sectors, where greater involvement in the early stages of projects is an advantage.
βI act as the link between clients, estimators and operational teams. This allows estimators to focus on technical pricing while I manage client relationships and support bid development activities.β
Building winning proposals through client engagement and strategic planning
Working across sectors including rail, energy, water and environmental engineering, AJ Engineering has completed projects across a wide geographical area. Known for its ability to work in challenging and remote environments, the business has delivered projects in the UK, Ireland, Germany and Antarctica.
A typical day for Lee involves reviewing new tenders, understanding client specifications, identifying key requirements and developing action plans to help shape a competitive proposal.
He added: βAt any given time, I am working on multiple tenders simultaneously. This requires close collaboration with our estimating and construction teams to develop the most effective strategy for each submission. Alongside this, I maintain regular communication with our clients and monitor the progress of live tenders, helping to forecast potential project awards and support the companyβs forward planning.β
People skills are among the most transferable strengths from Leeβs previous roles. While his focus used to be on promoting the businessβs capabilities, as pre-construction manager he now shows how projects will be delivered, including methodologies, programmes, resources and delivery strategies.
Lee said: βMy role demands a deeper understanding of project planning, risk assessment, pricing considerations, allowances, overheads and profit margins. I travel frequently and value the opportunity to spend time with clients face to face. Building strong relationships and engaging confidently with clients is an important part of the role.β
Expanding expertise through training and qualifications
Following his promotion, Lee completed business and project management Continuing Professional Development (CPD) through the University of the Highlands and Islands. The course covered topics including project management, contracts, business analysis and continuity planning.
He has also undertaken further specialist training related to his previous experience as a coatings inspector. This has enabled him to take on responsibilities as the companyβs responsible painting coordinator, providing technical guidance and support where required.
Lee said: βThere are numerous opportunities for learning and development across the business. Senior management actively encourages us to strengthen our skills, pursue development and explore new areas of interest. That is something I value and look forward to continuing throughout my career.β
Giving back to the community through lifesaving volunteer work
Outside of work, Lee is a volunteer crew member with the Moray Inshore Rescue Organisation (MIRO). Formed in July 2005, the service covers Findhorn Bay and its approaches, providing a rapid local response in situations where larger rescue boats may not be able to reach the area quickly due to distance or tidal conditions.
The team at AJ Engineering has been highly supportive of both Leeβs volunteering work and the rescue organisation itself.
Lee said: βWith AJ Engineeringβs strong community focus and understanding of the importance of supporting local initiatives, I have been able to balance the responsibilities of my role with my commitment to the rescue organisation.
βThe team has allowed me to attend callouts during working hours. In fact, the first one came through on only my second day with the business, and there was no hesitation in letting me go.
βIt has also financially supported the organisation. Last year, it not only designed a new rear stanchion post for our craft, the Glyn Whitehead II, but also manufactured and installed it. It means a great deal to everyone at MIRO to receive support from local businesses, and I am incredibly proud to be involved with both.β
A future focused on learning, collaboration and growth
For Lee, his career at AJ Engineering has been shaped by a willingness to embrace new challenges, develop his skills and build strong relationships with colleagues and clients. From progressing into a newly created role to supporting local community initiatives through volunteering, he has taken on a wide range of professional and personal responsibilities. In the coming months, Lee looks forward to expanding his knowledge of contracts through further training and pursuing more opportunities to support business growth.
