How my role as a laboratory manager in Iraq gives me a sense of purpose

Syed Iftikhar Ahmed has a wealth of experience in laboratory operations and analytical testing in the oil, gas and environmental sectors. He joined RSK Middle East in 2024, where he works as a laboratory manager in Iraq.

Having gained a master’s in applied chemistry from the University of Karachi in Pakistan, Syed went on to gain eighteen years of professional experience, ten of which were spent working as a laboratory manager.

Critical role laboratories play in supporting environmental and geotechnical projects

In his role as laboratory development manager, Syed supports environmental and geotechnical projects, primarily across Iraq. He also oversees laboratory operations, ensures international testing standards are complied with and maintains quality assurance and quality control systems to deliver reliable and defensible data.

Working closely with a multidisciplinary team that includes laboratory technicians, engineers, project managers and field staff, Syed contributes to projects related to soil and groundwater investigations, contaminated land assessments, construction materials testing and environmental monitoring.

He said: “My work supports large-scale infrastructure, energy and industrial developments where accurate laboratory data are critical to decision-making.

“As part of my role I review laboratory schedules, ongoing test results and project priorities. I also check that testing is being carried out in accordance with approved methods and that safety and quality procedures are being followed.

“I review analytical data, troubleshoot technical issues, coordinate with project teams, respond to client or internal queries and mentor laboratory staff. I also conduct audits, method validation (proving that an analytical procedure is reliable, accurate and suitable for its intended purpose), procure laboratory consumables and formulate plans for future projects. No two days are the same, which is one of the aspects I enjoy most about my job.”

The skills needed to be successful as a laboratory worker in Iraq

Syed described working in Iraq as being both challenging and rewarding. He said that the operating environment requires adaptability, resilience and strong collaboration with local teams. Projects often involve complex logistical and technical considerations, which makes the work intellectually engaging.

He added: “What I enjoy most is the sense of purpose and the opportunity to contribute to development in the region. Working with diverse teams and supporting projects that improve infrastructure and environmental management is very fulfilling. The experience has also strengthened my professional skills and diversified my perspective.”

Working in a laboratory requires good attention to detail, discipline and a commitment to accuracy, with Syed citing that technical knowledge is essential but problem-solving skills, good communication and the ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines are equally important.

From a leadership perspective, he believes patience, consistency and the ability to train and support team members are key. In addition, a comprehensive understanding of health and safety, quality management systems and ethical responsibility are also critical, as laboratory results must always be reliable and defensible.

He said: “Professional development is very important to me, particularly in laboratory and environmental work where standards, technologies and regulatory expectations continue to evolve.

“Keeping skills current is essential, not only for personal growth but also for maintaining the quality and credibility of laboratory outputs. Over the years, I have been trusted with increasing responsibility, including labour management and mentoring staff, which has significantly strengthened my technical confidence and leadership.”

In the months ahead, Syed and his team are going to continue developing the capability, consistency and efficiency of the laboratory. This will involve improving workflows, strengthening the quality assurance and quality control system and enhancing lab testing capabilities.

Syed added: “My aim is to continue supporting my team in their own professional development and expand our services to work with more clients on projects in Iraq and beyond.”
