Graduate scheme builds on success with new architecture placements
Since the RSK Graduate Scheme launched in 2023, fifty graduates have carried out two nine-month placements at businesses across the group. This year marks the first time architecture roles have been incorporated into the scheme since its inception.
One of the graduates undertaking a placement in architecture is Alice Scandrett. A creative since childhood, Alice always favoured and excelled in art-based subjects at school.
She completed a foundation diploma at the University of the Arts London before pursuing a degree in architecture at the University of Greenwich, where she was honoured as a runner-up for the Peter Luscombe Drawing Prize, an achievement that reflects her dedication and flair for design.
Alice’s first placement at RSK Group company ATP Architects and Building Surveyors will see her work as a Part 1 architectural assistant on residential projects with a particular focus on planning.

During my time at art school, I got the chance to explore different disciplines, such as fine art, set design, architecture and graphics. It was through this exploration that I discovered my passion for architecture. I enjoyed the process of creating spaces where I could be both imaginative and precise. This ultimately led me to pursue an undergraduate degree in architecture at the University of Greenwich, where I further developed my design skills and creative approach.
I heard about the RSK Graduate Scheme through a tutor at university. The rotational aspect of the programme was really appealing, and after some research it quickly became apparent that my passions aligned with RSK’s values. I was inspired by the projects and loved the idea of spending time working at two businesses that were part of a big group.
When I found out I had been accepted onto the programme, it felt amazing. The induction process was welcoming and informative. As well as a two-day meet up, we spent time at home preparing for our placement, completing mandatory training and hearing from people across the group. This included a call with RSK Chief Executive Officer Alan Ryder, who told us how he founded the business and answered any questions we had.
The whole induction really put me at ease and prepared me well for my first placement, so much so that when my first day came, I didn’t feel nervous. My first nine months at RSK will be spent at ATP Architects and Building Surveyors. Based in Loughton, which is just outside London, I’ll be working in the architecture team as a Part 1 architectural assistant. My role will see me work on residential projects with a particular focus on planning (looking at the initial designs). So far, I have been learning about the Building Regulations for different types of residential dwellings, which has allowed me to design my own flat layouts and building façades. Working in an office environment as part of a team has given me invaluable insight into the real world of architecture. This is something that can’t be gained at university but is essential for progressing toward chartership as a professional architect. I am also looking forward to the opportunity to go to site to see my drawings come to life.
During my time at RSK, I aim to expand my knowledge in the architectural field by gaining first-hand experience in as many different types of projects as possible. I plan to learn new software such as Revit for Architecture (building information modelling software that creates accurate and detailed 3D models of buildings), which will enhance the technical quality of my drawings. By the end of the graduate scheme, I want to feel well prepared to pursue my master’s degree and continue the path toward chartership as a professional architect.
