Engineering a successful career in critical infrastructure

Since joining RSK Group company Binnies, Graduate Civil Engineer Dylan Powell has made great strides in his professional development, contributing to projects that will have a real impact on the environment while making the most of the opportunities on offer to him at the business. This has seen him play a significant role in projects involving water quality, winning a prestigious industry award and being selected as the Institute of Water’s South East Rising Star for 2024.

Dylan studied civil engineering at the University of Portsmouth, having been inspired by the impact the profession has worldwide.

“I’ve always seen the difference that engineers, but especially civil engineers, can make around the world. They not only provide widespread value by delivering critical infrastructure that enhances lives but they also create and innovate sustainable solutions, which can combat climate change, increase biodiversity and create a more sustainable future.”

During his third year at Portsmouth, Dylan spent his summer on placement with Binnies and knew that working there as a graduate would create a space for him to accelerate his development as a civil engineer.

“Binnies’ registered professional development pathways with major institutions were a huge draw for me. Visibility of how you can develop is crucial for people entering the industry for the first time and Binnies has provided me with a structured pathway that means I’m able to see what key milestones I need to achieve – I really value that. Having spent my placement working at the business, I also knew that I would have a strong support network if I were to be successful in applying for the role. Again, individuals just starting out in their careers depend on the knowledge colleagues can impart, as well as support and encouragement.

“At the moment, I’m working on several projects in the south-east of England, where I am creating designs that will reduce the number of sewage spills to the environment. They will also increase the amount of sewage that can be treated and will increase the quality of the water that is discharged into the ocean. After these projects are commissioned, the aim is to increase the biodiversity in the local area.”

Dylan’s responsibilities range from undertaking hydraulics and geotechnical calculations to leading teams to create deliverables, communicating with key stakeholders and ensuring that the company provides a cost-effective design by the specified deadline.

“Binnies has a great culture, which is so encouraging and supportive, to help you achieve whatever you put the effort in to achieve. They have given me the opportunities to attend conferences, institution competitions, award dinners and development activities. I am so grateful to Binnies for facilitating this environment that strives to develop staff.”

Dylan’s efforts have seen him becoming involved in the Redhill office’s social committee and contributing towards professional development.

“My role on the social committee at Binnies is incredibly important to me and I’m extremely proud of the fun, social and engaging environment we’ve created. It’s an opportunity for people to collaborate and meet, which is a critical need for new starters and early career professionals in the industry.”

In late 2023, he won the New Civil Engineer (NCE) Graduate of the Year award, having spearheaded significant contributions to the sector through his work. His role in the development of an additional distribution chamber required for the Millbrook Water Treatment Works was one project highlighted by the NCE. The chamber needed a precise non-uniform flow split and thanks to his innovative thinking and initiative, Dylan completed several computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models. These determined whether the narrow weirs could pass the flow without breaching the coping level. After several iterations, Dylan identified and implemented a solution, which provided huge carbon and cost savings.

“Being named the NCE Graduate of the Year 2023 was a real honour and it’s fantastic to have been recognised for the contributions I’ve made to developing the industry.”

Dylan has also been selected as the Institute of Water’s South East Rising Star. The Rising Stars programme will see Dylan host a range of events throughout the year that will encourage everyone, but in particular, young professionals, to get more involved with the industry.

“I’m going to continue developing my civil engineering skills as part of my preparation for professional registration, as well as adding value to internal operations at Binnies, so it can continue being an inclusive environment, where everyone can thrive. Finally, I’m going to continue working on a range of projects that enhance communities and the environment.”
