Engaging engineering talent a top priority at Binnies Hong Kong

Committed to helping the next generation of engineers learn about what to expect from the industry, the team at Binnies Hong Kong recently welcomed students from the University of South China.

Throughout the year, colleagues from the business have attended several careers fairs to connect with top universities in mainland China and to encourage engineering professionals to consider a career with Binnies. To further demonstrate its commitment, the team arranged a day-long programme at its head office for a group of technology students.

Director of Projects Tony Lau said: “Encouraging and recruiting young engineering talent is a top priority for the business. Engaging with university students plays a crucial role in future-proofing the continuous growth of the company and its workforce. It also fills the gaps in the local engineering sector to support the development of Hong Kong’s infrastructure and maintain its position as a leading global engineering hub.

“The programme we put together was designed to give the technology students a comprehensive learning experience, as well as inspire them.”

Managing Director Andy Kwok welcomed the students before giving a talk on how key projects such as the Tseung Kwan O Desalination Plant and the Yuen Long Barrage Scheme make Hong Kong more resilient and sustainable and offer people a better quality of life.

A Q&A session followed, with students and professors asking a range of fascinating questions that led to in-depth discussions on everything from design and engineering theory to practical application.

Students were also treated to a building information modelling (BIM) demonstration, and members of the team who hail from mainland China shared their experiences on what it’s like living and working in Hong Kong.

Tony hopes that the day developed the interests of the students and they are now able to see how the theoretical concepts they learn about in class can be applied in a professional setting. He added how fantastic it was to showcase what life in Hong Kong is like. Describing it as a vibrant, cosmopolitan city that offers a unique blend of Eastern and Western influences, Tony believes it’s an excellent place for younger engineers and professionals to develop their careers.

He added: “Interacting with our team showed the students the diverse range of careers engineering can offer. For those passionate about engineering and its potential to shape a better world, it can be an incredibly fulfilling industry to work in.”
